A Salute to (two time!) Academy Award winning filmmaker PETE DOCTER

""I think the secret of animation, like anything, is capturing truth. Even though we are taking people to these far out places, and showing them characters like cars, bugs, or monsters — we see our job is to put something of ourselves on the screen. We have the opportunity to show people something they can all relate to, but in a way they've never seen before.""

Pete Docter, whom we celebrate this evening, is an American film director, animator, screenwriter, producer and voice actor from Bloomington, Minnesota. He is best known for directing the animated feature films Monsters, Inc. (2001), Up (2009) and Inside Out (2015) and as a key figure and collaborator in Pixar Animation Studios. He has been nominated for eight Oscars (two wins thus far for Up and Inside Out - Best Animated Feature), six Annie Awards (winning four), two BAFTAs and one BAFTA Children's Film Award, and a Hochi Film Award.

Twenty-four seasons ago--in 1992-- California Institute of the Arts student Pete Docter was saluted at the Cinema Society, having just won the Student Academy Award in the Best Animation Category for his animated student short NEXT DOOR.

We are honored to welcome Pete's return to the Cinema Society for a look at his amazing career, focusing on his creative world of animation that has brought joy to millions of film lovers throughout the world.
