SALUTE TO ROBERT FORSTER and

DIAMOND MEN

With the possible exception of Morgan Freeman, there's no actor in American movies today who projects effortless, world-weary gravitas better than Robert Forster. --Hollywood Reporter

The Cinema Society of San Diego is proud to welcome

Robert Forster with a Flashback screening of the film that opened the 19th season of the Cinema Society back on September 17th, 2002, a film that film critic Roger Ebert declared “a treasure”--DIAMOND MEN:

After 30 years on the road, a veteran jewelry salesman is forced to show his young replacement the tricks of the trade. But when the kid introduces him to the ladies of the “Altoona Riding Club, the old dog is introduced to a whole new set of “tricks”.

This was my third time seeing this film and though I have enjoyed it each time (and remembering that I need to recommend to more people each time), I have to admit that third time was in deed a charm for it was quite a thrill to see Mr. Forster in person. It is always so eye-opening to see/meet the real person behind which all the fine acting roles I enjoy (Max Cherry is my favorite)...and it confirmed what I have always believed, that the actor is not always like their characters, and Mr. Forster proved that theory. He was much more "east coast", fast talking, street guy then I ever anticipated, I guess I was expecting a stoic and restrained person much like the characters I have seen him portray, especially like in this film, yet I found him still interesting and enjoyable.

I honestly thought that this film would some day get picked up to be re-made with "popular"/bigger named actors so that it would get better viewing but I am glad it never did because this is one of the goods ones and should be seen by more people and appreciated for the fine acting and story that it is...

When Andy said this was a rerun, I didn't realize he meant it was a mixture of TRAINING DAY, CALENDAR GIRLS (younger), and SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION (the ending). Robert Forster also gets a "5".

My first time seeing this movie and I did not see the ending coming. GREAT! I thought it was a really interesting movie and Robert F brilliant. You really felt his embarrassment when he took off his clothes and his frustration with Donny W when they first went on the road. Loved Bess Armstrong and Jasmine Guy... loved this movie!

I liked it even more the second time. Several stories within the story. Robert Forster made it look easy and natural. Seemed like everyone had "the chemistry."

Not much background music. Interesting. I'm buying it to be sure all my friends get to see it !
