Our 30th Season Finale

CUPCAKES

As light and tasty as its title suggests, the latest from Eytan Fox’s (Yossi & Jagger; Walk on Water) is a charming comedy which takes a Eurovision-style song contest as a jumping-off point for a sweet and unabashedly nostalgic evocation of a time when, as one character puts it, "you borrowed a cup of sugar from your neighbor and stayed for coffee."

In contemporary Tel Aviv, six diverse friends – gay, straight, successful, not so successful – gather to watch the Universong competition. Like most viewers, they are appalled by the winning song, and taking the trials of one of their group whose marriage is splitting up as a subject, they jokingly compose "A Song for Anat" (actually the work of Babydaddy, from Scissor Sisters). They are as surprised as anyone when it is chosen as Israel’s entry for next year’s competition.

Starring a who’s who in the contemporary Israeli film, television and music industries, CUPCAKES is, in Fox’s words, "about fun and games and music and romance and happy endings. I’ve made films that were more confrontational and challenging. But this is something to sweeten life, for myself and the audience."

Running Time: 90 Minutes. Not Rated

PLEASE NOTE: CUPCAKES is in Hebrew with English subtitles.

ALSO PLEASE NOTE: “Society’s Finest Award” ballots will be handed out this evening to pick your favorites of the season!

Strictly B movie. Not Cinema Society material.

“six diverse friends – gay, straight, successful, not so successful”…. WOW! what a plot twist, how unusual.

Unfortunate for the group that the “Eurovision” contest limits membership to only six….. one more and they could have included the high school cheerleader who magically becomes engaged to Justin Bieber! Interesting as well that we were not privy to, other than the Russian entry (and only then for the trite little ‘wink-winks’ between two of the contestants), any of their competition.

This was pure high school schlock. But at least I got to hear a great piece of music from the incredible team of the Captain and Tennille, jess too bad they didn’t also include their “Muskrat Love” to top off the evening.

Cute. Predictable. Sweet. Easily forgettable.

Had I known this was to have been a Chick Flick I would have stayed home for the ballgame. To me it was painful to watch. Simpy, meaningless and boring from first shot to last. Nothing to "chew on" or care about. Not sure what the target market was. All I know is it was not me. We CAN do better. Hopefully next season will be richer instead of going for the lowest common denominator.

Appropriately titled and accurately described by Andy as “light & fluffy”. This was harmless silly fun with an interesting insight in to Israelis culture/social acceptance (??). I liked how each character was clearly a image/type (down to their “signature color” throughout) but it wasn’t too over the top. The soundtrack was fun as well, not sure if the music is really popular there today or if it was meant to be nostalgic and/or campy.

Nice way to cap the season.
