Salute to the 24th Anniversary of the San Diego Jewish Film Festival

NAOMI

The Cinema Society of San Diego is proud to salute the San Diego Jewish Film Festival, which celebrates its 24th Anniversary this year. For the celebration, we are pleased to be presenting one of the many delightful films shown over their 10-day celebration.

Ilan, a highly-respected university astrophysics professor, is married to the much younger and very beautiful Naomi. When Ilan discovers that his deepest fears have come true — Naomi has a lover — he is unable to control himself. In a fit of jealous anger, he stalks and confronts his wife’s lover. A film about guilt, love, devotion and a quintessentially overprotective Jewish mother, this edgy film successfully combines suspense and human nature in the best traditions of Alfred Hitchcock and the Coen Brothers.

Running Time: 99 Minutes

Not Rated

Please note: NAOMI is in Hebrew, Arabic and Russian with English Subtitles.

The “3” I’m giving NAOMI also goes for LABOR DAY and AT MIDDLETON. I realize that I enjoyed these films as much as I enjoyed THE BOOK THIEF, INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS, and NEBRASKA, which were well-reviewed and nominated for Oscars. You could quibble with the casting in NAOMI, fault the tonal misfire of LABOR DAY, and question the believability of AT MIDDLETON, but I never felt like walking out on them.

My companions and I all liked Naomi quite a bit. We had a spirited discussion following the show. The story was quite good, and the ending had a satisfying twist.
