Mediocre rating for a mediocre film

I enjoyed this movie well enough, once I got over the initial hump of believing that this frightened woman would have fallen so quickly for her abductor! It was an interesting enough story that I am interested in reading the book, which I am guessing will show a more believable transition. The characters were interesting, the acting was good, and the movie took me in unexpected directions, which I always like.

I'm all for a good love story, but despite great acting and cinematography, this movie wasn't one. I couldn't get past the creep factor because of the Brolin character using force to get into the lives of the mother and son and then more force to keep them quiet. (The Stockholm Syndrome wants it's story back.) He was really, really sorry it happened, but he was responsible for the death of his wife and son. And, in a very unpleasant scene, he was responsibile for a mentally challenged boy being slapped by his mother. It just didn't work for me.

It’s always risky making comments here when most of the reviews come out tomorrow, but Alice and Susan had the courage to do it. The need for a relationship is seemingly universal and, as seen in the film HER and in LABOR DAY, the relationship could possibly be with your smart phone or an escaped, convicted murderer. In LABOR DAY I was struck by the suspense of the fugitive/escape story line. I was struck by the smart dialogue. I was struck by the humor. But mostly I was struck by Reitman’s unique love story.

What a great movie! The understated performances of Kate Winslet and Josh Broslin were superb...so very tender, loving and believable. The family activities of playing ball, and especially making peach pie together carried me away! The flashbacks were beautifully done....at first cryptic but slowly informing us of the history of these people we had come to care for. It was beautifully created and a real pleasure to see.

What a great film. the humaness, the realness, the range of tenderness and respect. Great music, great scenery. I left the theater feeling enriched. Athough I really love the shorts, this was the best movie this week! And this one is why I"m a member of the cinema society. Critics be damned, this is a must see.
