Salute to Filmmaker Louie Schwartzberg

ArcLight La Jolla

The Cinema Society of San Diego turns 30, and we celebrate by saluting the gifted and talented filmmaker Louie Schwartzberg, who grew up in San Diego, and attended Crawford High School.

Louie is an award-winning cinematographer, director and producer who captures breathtaking images that celebrate life -- revealing connections, universal rhythms, patterns and beauty. With childlike wonder, the precision of a Swiss watchmaker and the gift of a great storyteller, he takes audiences on journeys through distance and time, helping us to truly see our world – its vast swaths of beauty and its smallest miracles – while inspiring humanity to become more responsible caretakers of this fragile planet we all share.

Louie will introduce, screen and discuss two of his films, each shown twice (you pick!) at special times (listed below) at ArcLight La Jolla.

PLEASE NOTE: At approximately 6:30pm, in the ArcLight La Jolla Patio area, The City of San Diego Council President Todd Gloria will be honoring the Cinema Society of San Diego on its 30th anniversary.

WINGS OF LIFE

Louie’s latest film, WINGS OF LIFE, narrated by Meryl Streep, is a feature-length documentary made for Disneynature. Utilizing time-lapse, high-speed and macro cinematography, the film offers an intimate and unprecedented high-definition glimpse into the hidden world of butterflies, hummingbirds, bats and bees – the precarious relationship between flowers and their pollinators – with a third of the world’s food supply depending on these increasingly threatened species. Prior to screening WINGS OF LIFE, Louie will present GRATITUDE, an inspirational short that reminds us why each day in our lives is a precious gift, and that experiencing the world through gratitude can open our hearts. Running Time: 77 Minutes. Rated G

Another triumph of a season opener! …and with a brand new “home” to boot (still has that new theater smell). I chose to view the film “Wings of Life”, great movie and great speaker/Q&A. I always knew nature was something to behold (and be grateful for) and that there were delicate and fragile Eco-systems that certain species relied on to exist and survive but I was not aware of some of the intricacies of that “dance” between animal and plant. The photography was breathtaking and mind-boggling. I will encourage others to see this movie when it is released. Though you didn’t make it, thank you Andy for showing it!

Amazing cinematography. The quality of the picture and sound was first rate. In fact I found myself wanting to swat whatever was buzzing / flying around. The movie brings home the point very clearly that we live in a magical world, its a religious experience as he pointed out. What I didn't like was after being shown the wonder and beauty, that we were told how we should react.

Two reasons to enjoy tonight, the well-made and entertaining film we viewed (AMERICA'S HEART AND SOUL)and the fact that it was the work of a local boy. As someone said in your film, “One who works with his hands, mind, heart, and soul is an artist.” Louie, you are an artist.
