42

Hero is a word we hear often in sports, but heroism is not always about achievements on the field of play. 42 tells the story of two men—the great Jackie Robinson and legendary Brooklyn Dodgers GM Branch Rickey—whose brave stand against prejudice forever changed the world by changing the game of baseball. In 1946, Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford) put himself at the forefront of history when he signed Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) to the team, breaking Major League Baseball’s infamous color line. But the deal also put both Robinson and Rickey in the firing line of the public, the press and even other players.

Facing unabashed racism from every side, Robinson was forced to demonstrate tremendous courage and restraint by not reacting in kind, knowing that any incident could destroy his and Rickey’s hopes. Instead, Number 42 let his talent on the field do the talking—ultimately winning over fans and his teammates, silencing his critics, and paving the way for others to follow.

Academy Award® winner Brian Helgeland (“L.A. Confidential”) wrote and directed the drama, starring Chadwick Boseman (“The Express”) and Oscar® nominee Harrison Ford (“Witness”).

A Warner Bros. Release, 42 opens commercially in San Diego on April 12th.

When Alan Shepard was on the launch pad and when John Glenn was orbiting, what were their thoughts? What, then, were the thoughts of Jackie Robinson as he broke the baseball color barrier? 42 is a wonderful movie. It beautifully follows Jackie from his signing until his pennant-clinching home run in 1947. There were many great scenes in the film; Leo Durocher in the locker room and Ben Chapman on the field, to name two. But did 42 get into Jackie’s head? Maybe that was not the film’s intent.

It is rare we see the story of a true American hero. Jackie Robinson went through hell to pave the way for future generations of athletes. Branch Rickey chose carefully and wisely. The film captured the basics of their story. The movie will become part of baseball lore.

I can see why the Obamas were so moved by this picture. Jackie and Rachel Robinson were pioneers. And this story was really told well. However it proved that Tom Hanks. Was wrong...there IS crying in baseball...especially for me tonight.
