PUTZEL

For some, life is an adventure filled with opportunities to excel and places to explore. For Walter Himmelstein, a young man endearingly known as Putzel, life literally doesn’t go beyond his family’s fish store and his community on the upper west side of Manhattan.

In this heartwarming comedy, Walter’s aspirations of taking over his uncle’s smoked fish emporium are disrupted by the arrival of Sally, who becomes romantically involved with his about-to-retire and very-married uncle.

While Walter tries to thwart their romance in order to insure his taking over the business, he finds his circumscribed life thrown off kilter, and after years of being undermined by his family and friends, he finally starts to realize his full potential. With Sally’s help, Walter confronts his fears and proves he is more than a Putzel.

Tried too hard to be funny. The fish shtupping scene was such a turn off that it was hard to keep watching.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed Putzel. Perhaps it was just what I needed, but Ihad more than a few good laughs and had some melancholy feelings as well. While I am not a New Yorker, the same can be said for any city with an old fashioned Jewish population. Sorry that neighborhoods and stores like that don't exist in many cities any more. For an indie film with such a low cost, it was wonderful.

Funny and funny-sad and surprisingly raunchy at times, which was a little off putting for me but from the sounds of my fellow members during the showing I attended I may have been in the minority. For some reason I expected better/more from such familiar (and seasoned) faces/actors. I did enjoy the special guests.

I loved this film! The characters were so well developed, I think it could make a good TV series. It left me wanting to see more of Walter and to follow his life. The setting--upper West side of NY--also appealing. Pure enjoyment and very funny. So well done and on a remarkably low budget.

Well I thoroughly enjoyed it. I laughed a lot. I liked the hokey music.

Read about movie in IMBD before we saw it. Too bad it didn't live up to expectations. A few lines were funny. Sthupping the fish was a hoot. The rest was a mess. It will be hard to get distribution unless it is to Jewish film.festivals

The acting was good. Ditto for casting (the aunt and uncle were particularly well-cast), cinematography, music, and other production values. I loved the story and thought the message was powerful. So where did PUTZEL go wrong? I thought it tried too hard to be funny. What could have been a sweet romantic comedy turned into a THE HANGOVER wannabe.
