In Celebration of Valentine’s Day
SAFE HAVEN
An affirming and suspenseful story about a young woman’s struggle to love again, Safe Haven is based on the novel from Nicholas Sparks, the best-selling author behind the hit films The Notebook and Dear John.
When a mysterious young woman arrives in a small North Carolina town, her reluctance to join the tight knit community raises questions about her past. Slowly, she begins putting down roots, and gains the courage to start a relationship with Alex, a widowed store owner with two young children. But dark secrets intrude on her new life with such terror that she is forced to rediscover the meaning of sacrifice and rely on the power of love in this deeply moving romantic thriller.
Starring Josh Duhamel, Julianne Hough, David Lyons and Cobie Smulders, SAFE HAVEN is directed by esteemed director Lasse Hallstrom (MY LIFE AS A DOG, SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN, THE CIDER HOUSE RULES). A Relativity Media Release, SAFE HAVEN opens commercially in San Diego on February 14th.
Running Time: 101 Minutes
Rated PG

Late to review but felt I had to post something to discourage films like this in a future schedule.
Not the kind of film that would cause me to recommend the Cinema Society. Certainly not thought provoking and not quality entertainment

Yes, it was predictable in certain ways, and seemed like a remake of Sleeping with the Enemy, but over all I enjoyed it well enough. I wasn't expecting the cop to be her husband, and I wasn't expecting the friend to be a ghost. Was anyone? I'm not sure I'm inclined to sit through it again to look for holes, but it wasn't a complete waste of time. The lead actress did better than I expected, and the leading man was handsome enough for my taste to allow me to get lost in the corny predictable-ness of it all! I'd give it a 2.5 if I could.

Dear Andy, I didn't get to see it but heard from Kayde that she loved it. It was her birthday and she was so happy to see a Romantic Comedy. She said it was a first for you to present. So hopefully her 5 will change the average rating.
Happy Valentine's. I will see you at the Romero screening at Pt Loma Nazarene.

Very nice people and scenery was great but movie had nothing else. You knew what was going to happen after the first 5 minutes.
It should have been a made for TV Hallmark movie.
The movie will be a bomb at the box office and I will steer people away from it.

First of all, I am always grateful when Andy brings the CS a mainstream movie. And knowing it was based on a Sparks novel should alert everyone that it will be a relatively predictable Chick Flick with a lot of holes. Julianne Hough did better than I expected, but as someone already said, my expectations weren't that high. I enjoyed it up until the last minute when it went from fluff to corn in a split second. Loved using the letters as a sentimental plot tool, but a ghost friend/guardian angel - seriously??? Glad I hadn't read the novel to ruin that surprise twist.

Well I have to admit, better than I expected but also my expectations weren’t all that high to begin with. Yes, very much a “chick flick” and can you say “Sleeping with the Enemy Redeux” (with a dash of “Sixth Sense” like Andy said)? I’m not sure if I agree with the person in the audience who said the actors came off stiff I think it was more that the story/script (direction?) didn’t ask much of the actors, there was a bit of “formula” to the movie, it was a little “paint by numbers” if you will. Still I was entertained for the length of the movie...and I have to give credit to my friend & Cinema Society pal Rosemary who said that Nicholas Sparks is to Literature what Thomas Kinkade was/is to Art...so true.

I think my fellow members have said it all. This is the kind of movie I avoid in theaters so it is disappointing to have to sit through at the Cinema Society.

Sometimes I love to just see a dumb fluffy pretty and predictable film. No surprises. There is nothing wrong with that. Better than some pretentious artistry that assaults my senses. I am not ashamed to say that it wasn't all that bad.

Wow, I want those two hours back. The suspense/drama seemed layered on to allow for some sort of a climax. But it was clear that love would win out and she would prevail from the start. It was just so silly. She falls through the floor narrowly avoiding skewing herself and what does she do, she paints it. The house goes up in flames in a small town and no one but dad shows up. She finds out that she has been hanging with a ghost for weeks and all she can think to do is kiss her man. Come on! If it does last more than a weekend it will ONLY be because of Mr. Sparks fans.

It is our habit to discuss and dissect a movie on the way home. Tonight there was nothing to discuss. No meat. No sizzle. It's a shame because we wanted more. The only good part was how cute the two lead characters were.

Hey Andy we love you but in our opinion this movie was awful on every level...one note "acting" from the lead and her crazed husband, holes in the plot (that little girl is smart enough to tell the guy that she hasn't seen the woman in the picture but doesn't clue anyone in regarding his menacing visit), boring scenes, ridiculous dialogue, threadbare and predictable.
The only thing that stank worse than this movie was the two woman in back of us, who refused to stop their loud and running commentary despite numerous requests. Stay home and watch it on DVD if you don't give a care about anyone else.
