COME AS YOU ARE (HASTA LA VISTA!)

The Cinema Society is proud to be saluting the nation of Belgium this season, and is honored to welcome back the hit of our season last year—COME AS YOU ARE (HASTA LA VISTA).

In this comedy-drama, three guys in their twenties love wine and women. Wine they have savored abundantly, but they have never had a woman. Under the guise of a wine tour they embark on a journey to Spain hoping to rectify that fact. Nothing will stop them. Not even their disabilities: one is blind, the second is confined to a wheelchair and the third is completely paralyzed.

Come As You Are is loosely based on the story of Asta Philpot, an American afflicted with arthrogryposis who fights for disabled people and their sexual rights. Philpot was the subject of a British documentary For One Night Only and was featured on several talk shows including Oprah.

“For me, this is a very human story,” says director Enthoven. “What I really want to show with this film is that all of us are living with a handicap when it comes to communicating with others.”

Running Time: 115 Minutes

PLEASE NOTE: COME AS YOU ARE (HASTA LA VISTA) is in Dutch with English Subtitles

Another Belgian gem, this one in Flemish. Amazingly touching but not cloying. Could have been raunchy but the director knew exactly when to pull back. Bravo Belgium!

At no time while watching COME AS YOU ARE did I think I was watching actors playing the roles of the physically challenged men. Impressive acting along with the good story and excellent screenplay all contributed toward an enjoyable, well-made film. This road trip film's stop and go pacing with momentum changers such as canceling the trip, skipping Paris, and the aborted first trip to the bordello made the whole journey feel all that more believable. There was much humor along with the seriousness; my favorite scene being the one with our guys in the pool on their inflatable floats with their drinks.

Thanks so much for bringing this amazing movie back to the Cinema Society. Bridget and I missed the showing last year. This was one of the best movies we have seen in a LONG time.

What a great movie! Hard to believe that no one picked it up for US distribution. Although I confess that reading the premise did not make me want to see it. I'm very glad I did see it, it's a real jewel. I missed it last year, thank you Andy for reshowing this wonderful movie. The good the ugly of humanity.
