INOCENTE

INOCENTE is a personal and vibrant coming of age story about a young artist's determination never to surrender to the bleakness of her surroundings. At 15, Inocente refuses to let her dream of becoming an artist be caged by being an undocumented immigrant forced to live homeless for the last nine years. Color is her personal revolution and its sweep on her canvases creates a world that looks nothing like her own dark past. INOCENTE is both a timeless story about the transformative power of art and a timely snapshot of the new face of homelessness in America: children. The challenges are staggering, but the hope in her story proves that the hand she has been dealt does not define her, her dreams do.

Running Time: 40 Minutes / Not Rated

What an inspirational experience, not only in a young girls ability to survive a trying and difficult life but also inspiring one to think about creating one’s own art. For me Inocente proves that one’s nature can overcome ones nurture (or lack of) and still find hope and happiness in their life if that is who they are....and thank goodness for the people at the A.R.T.S center that helped her and encouraged her along the way. As important as being positive and optimistic is for the individual we all need help and strong and supportive people in one’s life even if it comes from somewhere other than one’s family. I hope for great things for Inocente, may she stay grounded and creative and not lose sight of who she is

This is an important film because it makes us aware of the power of art, in Inocente's case the power of celebratiing life through color. It brings some hard facts to surface about homelessness. Also it introduces us to a place where miracles occur, ARTS, A Reason to Survive, created by Matt D'Arrigo. Inocente's ability to rise beyond predicable outcomes to her life inspire us. Her words about how her dreams define her, not her circumstances are ones to listen to everyday.

ARTS is a place I work and see miracles like Inocente's. Teaching art there is a reason for me to soar as I look over the work I have helped these talented kids achieve. Such a kick. Good kick.
