TEDDY BEAR

The 38-year-old bodybuilder Dennis would really like to find true love. He has never had a girlfriend and lives alone with his mother in a suburb of Copenhagen.

When his uncle marries a girl from Thailand, Dennis decides to try his own luck on a trip to Pattaya, as it seems that love is easier to find in Thailand. He knows that his mother would never accept another woman in his life, so he lies and tells her that he is going to Germany. Dennis has never been out traveling before and the hectic Pattaya is a huge cultural shock for him. The intrusive Thai girls give big bruises to Dennis' naive picture of what love should be like, and he is about to lose hope when he unexpectedly meets the Thai woman of his dreams.

Running Time: 92 Minutes / Not Rated

PLEASE NOTE: TEDDY BEAR is in Dutch, English and Thai with English Subtitles

This movie had a definite “film festival” feel....not that that is necessarily a bad thing. Like most films from film festivals or at least “foreign” film festivals there is more to them then being “blockbusters”’ or “Oscar potentials”, there is usually great insight into their country’s cultural and customs that prove interesting and entertaining. Not sure that I will find myself recommending this to anyone unless there is a very specific desire to see a movie about a “whipped” bodybuilder and the seedy side of Thailand.

An interesting peek into the life of a shy, frightened giant of a man. His sole comfort zone was the gym. The only time he smiled and excelled was when he was in that setting. His mother, as with J. Edgar Hoover's, was the picture of a control freak. (who pees while their son is showering?) It was a sort of coming of age story. Took a bit too long to get totne point, but did not drag .

A problem with digital movies is how dark they are. Puts a somber mood on a film which may not be there in other formats.

DVD quality takes away from the quality of the viewing experience, especially on the big screen. That being said the movie delivered as advertised ... Sweet, sensitive and a story of moral dilemmas. The rawness of sex tourism vs the naive morality of Dennis, the neediness of his domineering mother, his lying and betrayal of both Toi and his mother...all set up a pleasant conclusion in the late, coming of age movie.

What a great story line: Heavily tattooed Danish bodybuilder finds true love in Thailand. There were so many things to like about this film: the premise, the dynamics between the over-protective mother and boy-man son, the son's ultimate manning-up. I admit the scenes with the sleazy American proprietor and "sex tourists" at the bar in Thailand -- ugly, dissipated drunk old baby boomer white guys reliving a youth they probably never had, hanging on women young enough to be their granddaughters -- were my favorites -- seemed so real, and pathetic for all involved.

The movie moved too slowly and seemed much longer than it actually was. I disliked the murky quality of the photography.

Great movie.!

How did such a caustic, unsupportive controlling mom raise such a gentle man? Great acting, directing. Thoughtful character growth. Keep Em coming Andy!
