I really wanted to be "invested" in this movie but something was missing. Never really believed the two main characters were a couple. The only expression of fun was dancing in the rain. Intimacy stopped at pregnancy. Hard to really care about them. Was, however, was impressed with his wardrobe.

So the shooting on the beach was not true to the real life story?

I enjoyed the movie -- as much as one could "enjoy" such a movie. I thought it was well done, not at the level of a Schindler's List but it told an important story from interesting perspectives. The one part that did not sit well with me is having the little boys shoot him at the end. Clearly, that is not in the historical record and it seemed contrived to have miniature Nazis shoot him.

I love sweeping narratives, but in my experience it is better to read them than see them on the screen. I think this film should be cut by about 30 minutes, especially in the first part. Once the protagonists were faced with life-threatening experiences, I began to feel much more involved with the story. Of course the ending was devastating! Nonetheless, I did not feel there was real chemistry between the leads -- the script was too episodic and the bad guys too cartoonish.
