TO THE ARCTIC

An extraordinary journey to the top of the world, TO THE ARCTIC is the ultimate tale of survival. The film takes audiences on a never-before-experienced journey into the lives of a mother polar bear and her two seven-month-old cubs as they navigate the changing Arctic wilderness they call home. Captivating, adventurous, and intimate footage brings moviegoers up close and personal with this family’s struggle to survive in a frigid environment of melting ice, immense glaciers, spectacular waterfalls, and majestic snow-bound peaks. Narrated by three-time Academy Award® winner Meryl Streep and featuring songs by Paul McCartney.

TO THE ARCTIC opens at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center on April 20th.

I always enjoy a film at the Reuben H. Space Fleet Theater and it’s nice that C.S. has a tradition of getting to see one every season.

As for this film "To the Arctic", I liked the cinematography (seeing those Polar Bears swimming was majestic) and the music by Paul McCartney was very enjoyable, however I found the film a little lacking in story and little too preachy throughout. Of course I know the filmmaker can’t make a story out of thin air and so that may be why there wasn’t as much of a plot, however, after seeing the doc “Chimpanzee” recently (and maybe it’s isn’t fair to compare) I found it much more compelling and yet fully aware how endangered those chimps are (and the “message” was saved till the end). Still I am always pleased to see films “before everyone else” and would gladly recommend "To the Arctic" to all polar bear lovers.

A beautiful but tedious piece of propaganda. How many times can Meryl Streep use "Green House Gasses" as the reason for the melting, disappearing ice" the editing was quite poor. Too many random subjects: Bear; caribou; native fishermen; ship and crew. My pea sized brain found that not all the pieces and parts fit together. This was more like a series of short stories than one cohesive movie.

Movies are magic, and movies in the dome at the Fleet are even more magical. That said, several issues took away some of the magic: from my vantage, there was too much going on, forcing me to watch the film like I was courtside at a tennis match (TO THE ARCTIC might be better rendered on a conventional screen); the Paul McCartney music seemed an intrusive accessory (I kept trying to recall the Beatles’ greatest hits); the message seemed to target elementary school children; and it was preachy. On the other hand, it was magic.

Wonderful photography. The majesty and splendor really came through. Lacked a story, what happened to the honeymooners? Very disjointed, jumped around. While I believe much of habitat destruction and it's consequences, I was tired of having my nose rubbed in it. I am a suporter, but this was heavy handed. Nova had better polar bear footage from the polar bear cam,but video from the boat was nice. I really liked the music too. It was very special to see the landscape. The opening credits were kind of fun at first, but after so much ice

Wow! What an accomplishment! Astonishing photography, interesting/varied narration and the Paul McCartney tunes were perfect. I was digging my nails into my palms when the male Polar Bear stalked the Momma and cubs. Whew! Was wowed again and again by the footage taken from underwater. Unfortunately, we sat too close to the front so did not experience the full IMAX effect; will have to see To the Arctic again this summer from better seats!
