DYING TO DO LETTERMAN

This award-winning documentary follows funny man Steve Mazan as he chases a larger-than-life dream: performing stand-up comedy on David Letterman’s show. However, his quest becomes far more urgent when he learns he may only have five years to live. With long odds stacked against him, and time ticking away, Steve faces a universal question: Should one persevere in the face of every obstacle? Or is there finally a time to give up? A funny, inspiring, emotional film that proves it’s never too late to chase your dream.

Not Rated; Running Time: 80 Minutes.

I liked the style, the pace and story…..Loved that Steve Mazan and his lovely wife Denise (who almost stole the movie) were our (surprise) and special guests. It was heartfelt, real and never felt forced or “planned”. Encouraging and hopeful of course, they are people I’d like to know and would wish all the best in their endeavors.

The evening was a 5! I had a sneaking suspicion that we would see Steve at the Q&A and was not disappointed. The enthusiasm the film makers and its "stars" showed was contagious to say the least. The movie itself held my interest every step of the way. Using a prop like the mike while Steve talked was an excellent device as it set the narration apart while it tied the other elements of the film together. Research shows that attitude frequently dictates the quality of life's experiences of dealing with a chronic illness. Clearly that's the case here. For anyone who has a dream, the movie stands as an inspiration to not give up hope and to move along the path one step at a time. Can't wait to see Steve perform live in our area some time and to check out his book. Which I (gleefully) won in the after-screening drawing. You see, I am "Dying To WIN THE LOTTERY" next and because of the movie, I will continue to buy tickets week after week. Perhaps not too noble, but lots of fun. Thanks Andy. And all invovled.

Last night was classic Cinema Society. A wonderful film that I feel privileged to have seen ... and the opportunity to hear from the filmmakers/stars. Whether I "love" the movie or not (and I did love this one), I consider it a gift to get to hear from these creative risk-takers. Thank you Andy!

A really special night is why I give the movie a 4.... I did feel that the movie itself was a bit drawn out. What I appreciated was the "in real time" feel of the movie, though in fact... 5 years had gone by.. I admire the courage of stand-up comics and Steve's drive and vulnerability really shone through.

Thanks Andy. This was a sweet and special film. The story developed in "real time" pacing. These kids had a dream and shared it with the world. The fact that Steve survived made it even better. From the QnA it's clear Steve has grown comfortable in his own skin. I appreciated being let into the private life and times of all concerned. Watching the KEY set develop was fascinating. Let 's hope hope more people get to see what we were just allowed to see.

This is an undeniably inspiring story with some flashes of good movie-making, especially the more intimate moments between Steve and his wife. But I thought the movie as a whole was pretty tedious, and I'm sorry to say that I did not find Steve's comedy particularly funny. The only bit that made me laugh out loud was the one that ended "that's why I got arrested in Foot Locker." The bit about the hotel key, which got him on the Letterman show, struck me as a dud. I readily admit, though, that Letterman is a better judge of what's funny than I am.

It was a treat to have Steve, his wife, and the film-makers at the theater. Way to go, Andy.

At a liver cancer advocacy meeting in Washington, DC, Steve, Biagio and Joke premiered Dying to Do Letterman, and I've been waiting for it to get to San Diego so I could tell EVERYONE, you MUST SEE this!!

You won't be the same when you leave the theatre!
