SALUTE TO FILMMAKER TOM MCCARTHY and

WIN WIN

Tom McCarthy, acclaimed writer / director of THE VISITOR and THE STATION AGENT, once again explores the depths and nuances of human relationships in his new film about the allegiances and bonds between unlikely characters. Disheartened attorney Mike Flaherty (Paul Giamatti), who volunteers as a high school wrestling coach, stumbles across a star athlete through some questionable business dealings while trying to support his family. Just as it looks like he will get a double payday, the boy’s mother shows up fresh from rehab and flat broke, threatening to derail everything. McCarthy's deft touch with balancing drama and comedy, broken hearts and poignant humanity is at play in WIN WIN.

A Fox Searchlight Picture Release, WIN WIN opens commercially in San Diego on April 1st.

Running Time: 106 Minutes Rated: R for Language

PLEASE NOTE: AMC LA JOLLA 12 Theatres continues its uncertainty in closing its doors for remodeling. We are pleased they have permitted us to return for our salute this evening to filmmaker Tom McCarthy, who will be joining us in Auditorium 4 immediately following the screening of his latest film WIN WIN for a discussion.

I really enjoyed this film so much and the guest...and special surprise guest were the cherry on top. Mr. McCarthy's films are just so human. He portrays people we know, who we are and who we want to know. People that when real true life happens they are around to support us good or bad. Win Win didn't have a "Hollywood" ending but one that should happen more often in life, people doing the right thing after they were "human" and made a wrong choice. Having Paul Giamatti's character make up for his mistake by working two jobs (and more considering he was a husband, Dad and now caretaker) and still having the support of his family and friends, sends the right message. One has to be responsible for their actions, accept the consequences and fix it....there is no fairy godmother, secret power, super hero or magic wand (or Prod./Dir/Agent that has it explained away to make it a nice neat little package for a "happy ending"). Real life is tough....but it's worth it.

Just posted my comments on Facebook--you hit it out of the park last night Andy ! Saw Tom McCarthy standing in the hallway before he came into the theater---what a treat that was. I have already gloated to several of my friends that once again the Cinema Society showed us a "winner" of a film before it was even released into the theaters. You are one fabulous Director. Keep 'em coming--

Great movie! One of the highlights of the season, for sure. The guests were great. I saw them again on KUSI News on Wednesday morning, so they must be making the rounds.

I especially liked the depth of character in this movie. The transformations were believable, and they illustrate that while it's easy to have preconceived notions about people, they sometimes surprise you. It was a pleasant surprise to realize that Kyle had such a well developed sense of self and maturity that I had not expected from him at the beginning. Thanks, Andy!

Gina Flaherty's mother says s***; Gina says s***. Kyle's mother is ruining her life; Kyle is in the process of possibly ruining his. Now, the Flaherty kids’ father is cheating the state of guardian money and cheating his ward of proper guardianship. My, what examples we parents are setting! Tom McCarthy addresses these issues with good storytelling and great filmmaking. Yes, he has a stable of talented actors, but this film belongs to Alex Shaffer, who brilliantly portrays a really neat kid from a broken childhood.

To echo the other posts.. THIS is why I love being a member of CS. The movie was amazing...and Paul G is, in my opinion, just hitting his stride. He does so much with a silent moment ... brilliant. Meeting Tom McCarthy and Alex Shaffer was so special .... Thank You Andy.... a terrific evening. Can't wait for the "let's see how we did last week" moment next week.. :)

At the risk of repeating myself, tonight was another example of why I've been a CS member for so many years: a superb movie and excellent speakers. McCarthy has continued his string of cinematic treasures illustrating the worst and best that is humanity.

A truly wonderful film. Especially liked the casting -- the teenagers looked - well, like real teenagers! My only criticism: No authentic New Jersey accents, North or South. Yes, there is such a thing as a South Jersey accent -- think "strangled cat."
