127 HOURS

127 HOURS is the new film from Danny Boyle, the Academy Award winning director of last year’s Best Picture, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE.

127 HOURS is the true story of mountain climber Aron Ralston's (James Franco) remarkable adventure to save himself after a fallen boulder crashes on his arm and traps him in an isolated canyon in Utah. Over the next five days Ralston examines his life and survives the elements to finally discover he has the courage and the wherewithal to extricate himself by any means necessary, scale a 65 foot wall and hike over eight miles before he is finally rescued. Throughout his journey, Ralston recalls friends, lovers (Clemence Poesy), family, and the two hikers (Amber Tamblyn and Kate Mara) he met before his accident. Will they be the last two people he ever had the chance to meet? A visceral, thrilling story that will take an audience on a never before experienced journey and prove what we can do when we choose life.

Released by Fox Searchlight Pictures, 127 HOURS opens commercially in San Diego on November 19th.

Rated R for language and some disturbing violent content/bloody images

Running Time: 94 Minutes

I can't believe I actually watched the whole movie---well almost. I did have to avoid direct contact with the screen during some of the amputation scene--but I got thru most of it. Danny Boyle is simply a brilliant director. I'd love to know what made him decide to do Aron's story, however. Watching Aron film himself during his 127 hours was a film within the film. Amazing way to capture the real feel of his ordeal. I am definitely telling my friends this is a "must see"--but just be prepared.

PS. What an amazing month you have put together for us Andy! Thanks so much!

Wow, Georgi; a tough one to follow. What a film! Two of the many elements combining to make 127 HOURS a great film were the score and the silence. The score, ranging from pop to Chopin, heightened Aron's every emotion and made you feel that you were right there with him. The long stretches of silence reinforced how alone Aron was and allowed the viewer to detach himself and watch as from above.

I only give this a four because we don't have 4.5. A near perfect film. Found myself comparing it to Into the Wild. Both guys were selfish; both ventured into the wilderness; both turned that same gray brought on by dehydration and overexposure to the elements; both were based on books; and both were terrifically acted. In fact, I think both the actors were in Milk...but I could be wrong on that. (Where is a fact checker when you need one?)...The difference is that Aron had a chance to redeem himself and utter those important spiritual and emotional words: I NEED HELP! His experience allowed him to grow and change, which is an admirable quality. (Aside from his incredible commitment to live). Danny Boyle has some signature marks in a motion picture: the split screen treatment, the use of music and its various volumes and tones, and the commitment to telling a tale so rich that you forget about the technique and just follow the plot. To that point, the fact that we already knew the outcome of the situation and still were wrapped up in the excrutiating drama of it all is a tribute to the screen play, director, actor and camera work. This is a film that will be very hard to forget.

My favorite of the season by far, and my first 5. I'm still thinking about the movie today, and would highly recommend it to my friends. What a roller coaster ride of emotions I felt as I watched the story unfold, and I even managed to make it through "the scene" with eyes open. An amazing story about an amazing man, well acted, well filmed, and well directed. I think the Oscar buzz is warranted.

It is rare indeed a movie stays with you over night. "127 Hours" is that rare exception. Danny Boyle took a small incident and made it an adventure of courage and self reliance. There was a theme from "Slum Dog" of triumph over tragedy. James Franco emerged as a top rank actor. The whole of the film was on his shoulders and he performed admirably. I hope he has his tux ready for all of the awards shows.
