STILL BILL

It’s remarkable that the singer/songwriter behind such timeless hits as “Lean On Me,” “Ain’t No Sunshine,” and “Just the Two of Us” isn’t a household name. Equally remarkable are the unique path he took to fame, his reasons for renouncing it at its height, and the shining wisdom that the fiercely independent Bill Withers still shows in this revealing documentary.

Through interviews with Dr. Cornel West, Sting, and Withers’ family and friends—as well as concert footage and a soundtrack containing some never-before-heard songs—Still Bill presents a man who, at 70, and without fanfare, continues to make deep human connections in the form of music.

What an insightful, wise, humble and honest man Bill Withers is, yet what seems likes sadness appears to really be yearning. What that yearning is seems to be unknown, even to him. Though only 70 it feels like Bill could do and be whatever he wants, it's not too late. I really enjoyed this film's journey to uncover a story of someone that I took for granted was a bygone singer of a few classic songs from a bygone era....Bill Withers is so much more.

What an interesting man. And what a sense of humor. I can see how he captured his wife's heart. The number 1 attracter for women to a man is if he makes her laugh. In the movie there is a comment to the effect that he has been writing music in his head during his absence from performing and that some of them were on tape. Will any of them be released posthumosly (or perhaps before)?

It was great that his daughter could share her talents with us. Kudos to you, Andy.

Excellent film about an unusual man. What would WE do if we retired at 40? STILL BILL implies that underneath that crusty coating, Bill Withers yearns to return to the music business. But, he wants to do so on HIS terms and he has become reclusive and moody. His very talented daughter might be the vehicle to return him to the business.

Loved it. Perfect title -- after 70 years, he is still Bill.

What a poetic person he is -- the beautiful emotion he displayed to the theatre kids (stuttering group) and to his daughter.

I am still humming his tunes in my head.

This was a lovely snapshot of a beautiful human being. The music carried the film which was a homage to an icon of sweet soul music from our era. Bill Withers' folk singer daughter was so well spoken and sincere that her appearance rounded out the "gaping holes" in the movie which skimmed the surface pleasantly, if not inquisitively. Still Bill never really grappled with why Withers left the "biz," and the struggles he may (or may not) have overcome reaching the top. The movie itself was just fine. The entire evening was a wonderful Cinema Society experience.

You sure know how to throw a party. It was fascinating watching this gifted man walk through his life with grace and dignity. Obviously hurt in the music business he did not seem bitter. He just stepped aside. At his age and vantage point he shared his philosophy with humor while being self effacing. The directors allowed the story to go wherever Bill wanted to lead them. Not heavy handed or intrusive. On the negative side, DVDs should not be shown in a movie theater. Poor quality takes away from the effect of the film. The performance after the lights came up was just an added bonus. This lovely young woman has some very big shoes to fill. I wish her well.

Loved, loved, loved this film. I have always been a big fan of Mr. Withers' music (he and I are of the same generation), but I never knew what a wonderful, kind, intelligent human being he was. Also loved seeing his daughter perform; hope she makes it too as she is very talented. Don't know how you can get any films better than this one. Thank you Andy.
